How the Chain Works

Blockchains are a type of digital record-keeping. Instead of a paper notebook, where entries or transactions (like payments) are written down one after the other, blockchains digitally record those entries in a block.
Each block is time-stamped and locked to the one before it. The result is a permanent chain where entries exist forever and can never be altered.
Transactions run automatically through a network of computers that help keep the blockchain operating. They’re called . Each one follows the same rules, so there’s not one person or company deciding what goes through – the rules are in charge.
